The role of vitamin C in gum disease(advice from a Kirkland Dentist)
Vitamin C, or Ascorbic acid, is a water-soluble vitamin found in citrus fruits, such as oranges, grapefruits, and limes, as well as fresh vegetables such as green peppers and tomatoes. A deficiency in Vitamin C will reduce your body’s ability to heal wounds, and cause widespread damage to blood vessels, bones and teeth. Gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, though usually a sign of poor oral hygiene, is also an early sign of Vitamin C deficiency. A Bellevue dentist may be recommended. A severe deficiency in Vitamin C is known as Scurvy. With Scurvy, the gums become grossly inflamed and teeth can become loose. You may recall that English sailors in the late 1700’s were often called "Limeys" because they took lime juice on long voyages to ward off Scurvy.
A deficiency in Vitamin C will make you more susceptible to gum disease, so make sure you take 300-500mg daily. Unfortunately, doses in excess of the recommended amount will not improve existing gum disease.
